CHAMORRO activists held a peaceful protest yesterday afternoon at Chief Quipuha Park in Hagåtña.
According to Trini Torres, one of the leaders of the Taotaomona
Chamoru Native Rights organization, the group is protesting U.S.
colonization which they say is “silencing our self-determination” and
causing the military to use more land for firing ranges. Joining the group was
Nasion Chamoro and other organizations.
Torres believes if the military wants land, they should really pay rent as in the Philippines and other areas.
“They
are depriving our people from using our lands. Those lands had been
agricultural lands,” she said, referring to property that was taken away
from the original owners.
