Under international law, t...The above is mistaken.<br /><br />Under international law, the Charter of the United Nations, nations do <b>not</b> hold sovereignty over a colony or non-self-governing territory. Under Chapters 11 to 13 of the UN Charter, nations have legal obligations towards any non-self-governing territory which they are occupying or imposing their rule over.<br /><br />West Papua was under Dutch control until the US got the Dutch and Indonesia to sign an agreement in 1962 asking the United Nations to occupy and administrate the colony. Chapter 12 of the UN Charter allows this option known as trusteeship, and on 23 September 1962 the United Nations agreed to make West Papua an international concern of the UN by approving the Dutch request.<br /><br />West Papua is a UN trust territory which is being administrated by Indonesia.
